The W started in 1997 with eight teams, a summer-only schedule and games you could barely find on TV. Thirty seasons later, it's a powerhouse and a model for all women's sports.

Journalist Tamryn Spruill has covered the league since 2014, back when almost nobody else was, and she tells the whole ride: Swoopes, Leslie, and Lobo packing arenas, the Comets winning four straight titles and then folding entirely, the lean years, the sexist coverage, and the players who used social media to take control of their own story.

I am still reading this beauty of a book, and it's been worth it. You will learn all about today’s stars but also the players who never got the highlight reel but built the league anyway.

Read it in the off season!
